Going over the top
No-man's land was one of the worst places to be on the battlefield. Full of barbed wire, mortar holes, and open to machine gun fire, it was any soldiers worst fear.
It was almost always a suicide mission, with soldiers in the trenches being ordered to leave their safe position and charge at the waiting enemy.

Gas
The Germans developed chemical warfare in WWI with chlorine and mustard gas. Initially, many were terrified of the weapon as it was new technology.
It burns the eyes and lungs, and is strong enough to kill a person. This struck fear into the hearts of many soldiers.
Friendship
Many soldiers developed friendships while fighting in the war, and it was a tragedy to lose one of these friends.
Many feared for their comrades dying and being left alone.
