Cold

During the winter months, the trenches were open to the snow and the cold. Some trenches had bunkers which could be heated, but those on the front line faced the weather head-on.
Couple that with the hard metal of the rifles, and being hit by mortars and bullets, the winter months were some of the most treacherous for the soldiers.
Rain

There was also no protection from rain in the trenches. When it rained, soldiers were required to carry on regular duty. This was still possible, though it was much more dangerous and difficult.
The trenches would fill with water, causing bodily harm like trench foot. Fortunately, a draining system was developed for the trenches (right) so the trenches would stay as dry as possible.
